This fabulous burgandy cloth hardback book, with gorgeous gilt impressions both on the front and the spine, is in excellent condition. Normal wear and marks apply consistent with use and age. Hardly ever used. Some shelf-life wear and marks. Dust jacket included, which is in really good condition. All 485 pages intact, all pages, text and illustrations in really good, clean, readable order. Paul Morphy (1837-84) was acknowledged as the World's leading player in the middle of the nineteenth century and one of the greatest attacking players of all time. He revolutionised chessplayers' understanding of the importance of rapid devlopment and open lines and his games still have great importance today. This classic work contains more than 150 of Morphy's best games against the leading players in Europe and America and a brief biography of Morphy's career. This facsimile reprint of the original first edition, published in London in 1860, again makes available that important collection of Morphy's games, with annotations by one of the leading players of the same period. Johann Jacob Lowenthal was a Hungarian emigre, who became naturalised British subject and a leading figure in English Chess. He lost a match to Morphy in 1858 and later became the chess columnist of Era and Iluustrated News of the World and Editor of the Chess Player's Magazine. He made many contributions to opening theory including the Lowenthal variation of the Scilian Defence. A truly great book, a collector's item, especially for historians of the beautiful game of chess. Ideal for the home library. Artikel-Nr. 371
