A Course in English Language and Literature is for learners who wish to study literature and need to improve their language skills. It provides an opportunity for learners to practise grammar and lexis through the study of literary texts. A Course in English Language and Literature introduces learners to some of the finest literature in English. It is based on a collection of extracts from modern and older literature originating in Britain, the USA and the New Commonwealth. These extracts are taken from a wide range of sources and together provide a fascinating selection of literary styles. Each extract is characterized by a particular language feature; this feature becomes the focus of language exercises based on a close study of the extract. Through this study of the language highlighted in the extracts, A Course in English Language and Literature provides learners both with a knowledge of literature in English and with structured language practice. It also gives them an awareness of how the writers studied in the course use language to achieve their literary aims. Each of the 20 units comprises: - an introduction to the extract - the extract - comprehension questions calling for close study of the extract - a commentary pointing out special features of the extract - language-study exercises based on the features discussed in the commentary - usually, a second extract from the same work, followed by further language-study exercises. At the end of the book, there are notes on the writers studied, an index of writers, an index of language features dealt with in the exercises, and a glossary of linguistic and literary terms used in the course.
