I was working as a music journalist with The Irish Press when I was approached to write a book about Sinead O'Connor. I'd long been fascinated with the young singer since our first encounter at a Pogues' concert in Brixton academy, London on St Patrick's Day, 1988. I had a lot of 'scissors and paste' material, readily to hand, but I felt and knew there was more to be discovered and written. I said then and I say it now, this book was then and is now, merely a footnote, to a story, a life and a career that will go on. And on.From the Back Cover:
In less than two years Sinead O'Connor has become the most talked about woman in rock. Her striking appearance, controversial statements and worldwide chart success have catapulted the Dublin born singer to the forefront of pop.
So Different is the unauthorized biography of Sinead, written by Dublin journalist, Dermott Hayes and researched through numerous interviews with her friends and musical associates.
It tells of Sinead's stormy upbringing, her early musical experiences in Dublin and how she rocketed from minor art rock celebrity to megastardom following the release of the tearful video to accompany her version of Prince's song, 'Nothing Compares 2U'. Nine months later, her album 'I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got' had sold over six million copies and followed the single to the top of the UK, US and numerous other national charts.
But So Different also chronicles the problems Sinead has encountered: her row with Dublin superstars, U2, her outspokeness, her relationships with men and the childhood traumas which she has channelled into a positive creative force.
Sinead O'Connor is 'Bambi in Bovver Boots' - Dermott Hayes analyses her appeal and explains why she is...So Different.Includes many hitherto unreleased photographs and a comprehensive discography.
