Robert Day was born in 1957 and was raised in Derbyshire. He spent his early years growing up around railways, but only developed an interest after his father left BR, when railways were no longer being modernised but instead shut down. Robert has worked in a variety of jobs including being a librarian, furniture factory worker, social security and even the regulator's office, Ofwat. It was in 2010 that Robert developed his freelance career as a photographer and writer and is now Secretary of the Austrian Railway Group and lives in North Warwickshire. He has received international awards for his photography, including the international Labour Photographer of the Year 2008 and first prize in the 2012 Awards Program of the Center for Railroad Photography and Art in the USA. Robert Day was born in 1957, the son of the chief signalling linesman at Toton Marshalling Yard near Nottingham. After his father was headhunted to the signalling drawing office in Derby, the family moved to Belper in Derbyshire, where he was brought up. In 1975, he went to Newcastle upon Tyne to study Librarianship. Later, he worked variously as a civil servant, a press office staffer, a trade union representative, an IT software tester, a proofreader and editor and a professional photographer. He is an Honorary Life Member of the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS). His photography has won awards in the UK, USA and Australia. He now lives in North Warwickshire.
