Statistically railway travel remains one of the safest forms of transport, although in recent years many public concerns about issues of railway safety have arisen. This is undoubtedly the result of heightened media interest, particularly when there was an opportunity to launch an attack on beleaguered Railtrack. But there was also an undeniable concern that, with the industry operated by more than 100 different companies, there was not necessarily the same culture of safety consciousness that existed in the days of British Rail. Accidents like Ladbroke Grove, Hatfield, Great Heck and Potters Bar have all arisen for differing reasons and, while the railway industry was not wholly responsible in all cases, the death and destruction caused highlighted ongoing concerns about investment and maintenance. Such were the concerns, for example, that after Hatfield the national network effectively disintegrated into months of chaos as vast stretches of track were closely examined. Over the years one of Britain's most pertinent commentators on the subject of railway safety has been Stanley Hall. His first book Danger Signals was published in the late 1980s and since then he has been continually investigating the causes and effects of railway accidents. His first examination of railway accidents in the era of Privatisation came out in 1999, entitled Hidden Dangers: Railway Safety in the Era of Privatisation. It examined accidents from Clapham in 1988 through to Southall in 1997, and sought to examine whether safety had been compromised by Privatisation. This new title examines many of the most recent and high-profile incidents. The author now looks in detail at how far the railway industry has responded to the realisation that safety could easily have been compromised after 1995 and how far the industry has actually gone in trying ensure that similar accidents can never recur in the future.
