First, three unusual patterns are briefly considered: 'Branch Street' (Paddington), 'Ship Street' (Liverpool) and 'Ashton' (Yorkshire). These provide a contrast for the account of traditional patterns of working-class life in different regions of England, and this account in turn gains by contrast with the chapter on new forms of social life on housing estates and elsewhere. The final chapter in volume one--an interpretation of different patterns of middle-class life-is perhaps the most original, and in its turn adds depth to the perspective of the whole. The second volume is concerned with child-rearing practices and covers such topics as parental discipline-indulgence, strictness and consistence; parental interest in the child's intellectual development; traditionalism and authoritarianism in child-rearing; and the parents' reactions to social change.
