Buchbeschreibung Cloth with dustjacket. Zustand: Gut. XV, 230 p. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Schutzumschlag berieben, beschabt und leicht ausgeblichen, kleine Randläsuren, Fußschnitt minimal verschmutzt, sonst sehr guter Zustand / Dust jacket rubbed, scuffed and slightly faded, small marginal tears, bottom edge minimally soiled, otherwise very good condition. - Phocion of Athens has remained the most enigmatic of Plutarch s heroes. Though often thought to be poor and of humble origin. Phocion was educated in Plato s Academy, was prominent in the innermost circles of Athenian society and politics, and was known as a soldier throughout the Greek World. Plutarch s Life of Phocion has not been closely analysed since 1840; by examining the text in detail, this present study gives a totally new assessment of this significant and complex personality, while shedding important light on the history of fourth-century Athens. The author traces the origins and development of the historical tradition that so shaped an image of the "Good" Phocion that his actual achievements as politician and general were all but lost. Here, rescued from obscurity, Phocion can now be seen in the context of fourth-century Athens: as a major political leader, as a worthy opponent of Philip of Macedon, and as a champion of a politics of justice rather than of the traditional politics of enmity. / CONTENTS List of Diagrams and Maps Preface Abbreviations Introduction 1.
