8vo; original orange boards, lettered in gilt on spine; laminated pictorial dustwrapper; pp. 192; plates; map. Dustwrapper ever so slightly rubbed and edgeworn. Very good condition. "Gordon, like some other great generals, was not cast in a traditionally belligerent mould: with his back to the wall that strangeness of outlook which sometimes led to the charge of madness, yielded place to the reminder that he sprang from three generations of soldiers. His personality puzzled many of his contemporaries: and it is certainly not in keeping with the pattern of our time, when a stiff upper lip is held to be synonymous with an empty head. Apart from the fact that his fate was decided by the paucity of military means at his disposal, an odd assortment of details contributed to the end of this typically Victorian hero. There was the fall in the level of a river, a time-wasting search for scarlet tunics and the unromantic fact that a colourful naval officer developed boils.". Artikel-Nr. 6525
