When the devious and charming writer Patrick vaughan is found dead by the roadside one wet autumn night, it seems at first that he must have been run down by accident. Nevertheless, details of the death do not fit the picture of a hit-and-run accident. Finch, the quiet and persistent Essex detective, feels strongly that he is dealing with murder. Probing delicately he uncovers evidence that local relationships with vaughan in this well-to-do neighborhood are more raw and anguished than they appear.
