With the new constitutional order the orthodox and traditional rules of statutory interpretation have changed forever. There is a new lexicon: plain language drafting and constitutional values; international law and ubuntu; international human rights law and the constitutional state. As a result of certain provisions in the supreme Constitution, interpretation of statutes is now inextricably linked to disciplines such as constitutional law, administrative law, international law and fundamental rights. Interpretation of Statutes can no longer be taught, applied and understood in isolation, nor can the 'golden rule', a few maxims and the Interpretation Act be sufficient tools of the trade.
