The Notable Characters children's book describes the musical adventures of five vibrant Caribbean students who gather every mid-day break from school to play their music in Poplar Park. They are led by the eldest, Wholesome, shown with the whole note symbol on his shirt. The other Notables Characters are bassist Dutch, guitarist Qwater, keyboardist Eighty-eight and their lead singer Suite Sixteen.
They are challenged by the Rest siblings who also have a band. The Rest siblings: Wholelotta Rest, Half Heart Rest, Arma Rest, Footsy Rest and first grader Un Rest, often stop in the middle of their songs to rest. The Notables are more popular in Poplar Park because they play continuously from start to finish, like their catchy theme song, "We Had Our Nap We Had Our Meal and Now We Feel Okay."
You can hear this song in its entirety at Washentree.com. Written and illustrated by Leonard B. Rountree and edited by Rachael L. Byrd, "The Notable Characters" is a must-have book for those who are relatively new to participating in the performing arts and for those exploring an instrument for the first time. Note that each Notable Character visually represents one of the five basic note symbols and each Rest sibling, one of the basic five rest symbols. This is a clever way to introduce to kids the concept of the most commonly used musical symbols, notes and rests.
For those interested in a story that teaches empathy in addition to music literacy, this is an excellent choice. Be sure to download the audiobook version at Washentree.com. All of the music was written, arranged and performed by Leonard "Lenny" Rountree.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The Notable Character's is a children's book that shows how empathy can be a healing ingredient in the aftermath of bitter rivalry and conflict. Set in the fictional Caribbean Island of Realla (pronounced Ree - all - ya), this story takes you through a typical day in the life of The Notable Characters; a musical and diverse group of five vibrant elementary and middle school students. They are challenged by The Rest family, a rival musical group. Each member in each group has equal importance despite their instrumentation. The audio book contains the music performed in the story and is available at Washentree for digital download. The book is especially written and produced for kids in grades 4 through 8. Lenny Rountree is a music educator and independent recording artist who authored and illustrated the Notable Characters. He provides through narration and illustration, explanations of basic music terms and concepts, using character traits to educate about notes, rests and other common musical symbols. Theater companies may also be interested in 'Swirl,' a comical musical, based largely on the Notable Characters story. A great benefit of owning this book is that parents and teachers can repeatedly reference it for music theory literacy and engage their children and students respectively, in a fruitful discussion about empathy, diversity, inclusion, and conflict-resolution.
