The “Golden Rules” outlined in this manual represent viewpoints, principles, and philosophies mentors can use to guide their mentoring approach when working with Black males. These Golden Rules are based upon 5 years of qualitative data gathered from hundreds of conversations, interactions, and focus groups with Black male college students.

The 55 Golden Rules outlined in this manual will maximize a mentor’s ability to build into their Black male mentees the psychological skill-set and developmental assets necessary for achieving success! These 55 Golden Rules revolve around the most common risks, barriers, and challenges reported by Black male college students. These 55 Golden Rules were also assembled with intense consideration of the common attitudes, perspectives, and coping responses that are most likely to lead to academic failure or academic success. Finally, these 55 Golden Rules represent thematic attitudes, perspectives, approaches, techniques, and modes of communications that demonstrate the greatest impact as it relates to informing, inspiring, and re-conditioning Black male college students.
