National stigma is the negative brand, mark, and label mainstream society has given to Black Americans. Internalized Stigma occurs when a Black American begins to believe and accept the negative labels society has placed on their racial group. The purpose of internalized stigma is to condition Black Americans to think, feel, and behave in a manner (e.g. impulsive and externalizing behaviors, self-sabotage, withdrawal, goal avoidance, escapism, etc.) that justifies racism and discrimination (i.e. you are ignorant and inferior so I have a right to withhold your opportunities, access, and resources).
The ultimate goal of this manual is to empower Black Americans by providing them a set of mental and behavioral principles that will protect them from internalizing the inferiorizing messages of American racism. This manual also serves the purpose of helping Black Americans “un-internalize” the messages of inferiority many of them accept and believe. This manual systematically outlines 21 principles for living Black in America. This manual gives the reader an opportunity to download information and instructions that will result in the development of the psychological skill-set necessary for remaining confident, motivated, and focused on their journeys through the maze of American Racism.
THIS MANUAL PROVIDES SPECIFIC STRATEGIES FOR:
1. Un-internalizing racism and stigma.
2. Enhancing your self-esteem as a Black American.
3. Tapping into your natural and acquired strengths.
4. Overcoming racism in the workplace.
