In this alphabetic journey around the world, author Larry “Jungle” Shortell shares tales from his most memorable moments. Since embarking on his travels more than 25 years ago, Shortell has completed three around-the-world trips, explored more than 100 countries, set foot on all seven continents (at least twice), and visited each of the 50 states in the United States. Summers On: The Global Explorations of an Educator narrates stories about his travels in Antarctica, Antigua, Argentina, Australia, Barbuda, Bali, Borneo, Brunei, Cambodia, Easter Island, Galapagos Islands, Honduras, India, Indonesia, Laos, Mexico, Nepal, Nicaragua, Papua New Guinea, Rwanda, Tahiti, Tanzania, Tibet, Uganda, the United States, and Vietnam. This travel memoir describes his journeys to exciting places, including Angkor Wat, the Taj Mahal, the Moai heads in Rapa Nui and his visits with pygmies in Africa. Shortell describes his exploits as he SCUBA dives with sharks; swims with dolphins, whales, and crocodiles; snorkels with whale-sharks and manta rays; bathes elephants; faces off with an orangutan; is bitten by a sea lion, and lies down with mountain gorillas, penguins, giant tortoises, and a sun bear. He also shares his encounters with a yak, proboscis monkeys, hippos, rhinos, and leopard seals. He even recounts his near fatal experiences with shipwrecks and high altitudes. Summers On not only captures the essence of Shortell’s zest for life and adventure, it also communicates the personal growth and understanding that can be gained through travel.

Larry Shortell was born in central Connecticut in 1964 and graduated from Rocky Hill High School in 1982. His world travel and documentation of natural wonders began with a tour of duty in the US Navy. After his honorable discharge, he moved to Florida to pursue his career as a certified SCUBA dive master. He ultimately became an EMT and a dive instructor. From there, his travels led him to some of the most exotic places in the world. Successful completion of a BA in special education from the University of South Florida and an MS in education from Cambridge College in Massachusetts opened a door to another type of travel. Larry’s position as a special education teacher in Florida, Alaska, and Hawaii provided him with an opportunity for intense study and photographic documentation of the natural world. Larry has also lived in Massachusetts, Tennessee, California, the Galapagos Islands, and Argentina. He currently resides with Lisa, his “girlfriend-plus,” and teaches in Connecticut, where he weaves the images and stories of different cultures and places into his classroom. Since the start of his traveling, Larry has completed three around-the-world trips, explored more than 100 countries, set foot on all seven continents, and visited each of the 50 states in the US.
