The Girl Project 2014 is an original body of work that was written by a selected group of teenage girls from Central Kentucky over the course of a year. The Girl Project is an arts-meets-activism initiative whose mission is to empower teenage girls to challenge the misrepresentation of women and girls in contemporary American media culture. The Girl Project provides girls with a safe, creative environment where they discuss how the misrepresentation of girls and women affects their goals, social interactions, body image and self-esteem. The Girl Project class of 2014 was introduced to female teaching artists from around the nation who served as their teachers and mentors, leading them in bi-monthly dance, spoken word, movement and visual art workshops. These workshops were designed to facilitate the girls’ creation of this final body of work that was then adapted by founders and co-directors of the project.
