With this new collection of poems, David Elsasser is inviting us to savor the delicious moments of life. Whether he is bathing with strangers clothed only in mist or having sex for lunch with a famous poet, Elsasser revels in sensual pleasure even as he wrestles with the passage of time. He stops to remember a future that never happened—the utopian dreams of the 1964 World’s Fair—and makes sidelong glances at the dark masses of other possible futures rolling down the hill in his direction. But, in the end, this book cultivates a poetics of joy, a playful irony that that releases the poet from the burdens of both longing and loneliness, allowing him to recline on a cloud-plush couch and, finally, watch TV with God.
