PreSchool-Grade 2 A charming treat, Ferryboat describes, in simple text and with bright watercolor illustrations, a family's crossing of the Connecticut River from Chester to Hadlyme. How the ferry operates (it never needs to turn around since the front is the same as the back!) is sure to fascinate young armchair mariners. The use of the first-person plural and the perspective used in the illustrations allow children to feel a part of this journey. The lovely blues and greens evoke the summer season, and the magnificent sunset is breathtaking. An appended map and historical note about the ferry enhance the amount of information conveyed so effortlessly and appropriately for the age group addressed. Many children in this country have never seen a ferryboat, much less experienced the thrill of riding on one. Author Betsy Maestro and artist Giulio often ride the Chester-Hadlyme Ferry near their home in Connecticut. This book is fashioned after that ferry, and their words and pictures are so completely involving that it's almost like being on the real thing. The author carefully explains the workings of the ferry and takes readers from shore to shore, lovingly describing the sights and sounds of the ride. "The ferry doesn't have to turn around. Its front is the same as its back!" The double-page spreads, with a deep blue river and lush tree-lined shores, are colorful and appealing.
