But in Shakespeare, Oxford scholar Dennis Kay combines historical fact with a practical discussion of the plays, poems, and sonnets, interwoven with relevant moments in both Shakespeare's life and his age: the financial ruin of his father, his marriage to an older woman, the early deaths of both his brother and his only son, his arrival in London to build a theatrical career, the business interests that left him a wealthy man, the pleasure of the royal patronage, and, finally, family disgrace just before his death. Perhaps most fascinating is how Shakespeare emerged as survivor: a man who challenged and questioned his art, but one who did so without alienating either his political masters or those who flocked to see his plays. The product of exhaustive research, Shakespeare manages to demystify the aura that has risen around Shakespeare and his work. The most accessible chronicle of the man and his times available, Shakespeare is a must for those who admire his work and those who covet an engaging read. / Contents ONE Stratford and the Shakespeares TWO Upbringing in Stratford THREE The Lost Years FOUR From the Country to the City FIVE The Only Shake-scene in a Country SIX The Plague and the Poems SEVEN Right Happy and Copious Industry EIGHT Art and Politics NINE The Arte and Faculty of Playinge, 1603-6 TEN Three Classical Plays ELEVEN A World Ransomd, or One Destroyd: The Romances TWELVE Lets Go Off, and Bear Us Like the Time: The Last Years.
