The reader is challenged to find the ladybug in each of the illustrations which depict much larger animals.

"Ladybug, ladybug, where are you going?" begins this ebullient, practically wordless romp. The deceptively simple concept book juxtaposes the tiny ladybug with--for the most part--increasingly large animals over a succession of brilliantly colored spreads. Youngsters searching for the peripatetic beetle will encounter a variety of animals in their native habitats--whether in the treetops or below the sea. The ever-present ladybug slyly offers eager explorers an awareness of scale and a sense of the relative size of each animal, from butterfly to blue whale. In Finzel's first book, her art is dazzlingly bold and fairly bursts from the pages. This slightly oversize volume cannot begin to contain the enormity of some of its creatures; often emblematic portions are revealed instead--a gray, sturdy elephant foot; the curved, searching tip of a trunk. An exhilarating excursion. Ages 3-up.

In each double spread in this large, square book, a minimal
text challenges readers to find a ladybug hidden on or near
increasingly larger animals shown life-size--even an elephant's
foot and a whale's eye. A final spread shows all the animals
together, drawn to scale; it takes an extra two pages to
accommodate the whale, and the ladybug is now too small to see.
Finzel's well-designed paintings are bold and dramatic; the hunt
is entertaining, especially when the ladybug turns up among the
crocodile's teeth; best, the concept of relative size is conveyed
with astonishing simplicity and power. (Picture book. 3-7) -- Copyright ©1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.
