Kindergarten-Grade 3-- Stevenson's dry wit and spare style are perfect for this story of an old man who escapes the frustrations of city living by moving to the country. But Mr. Hacker isn't prepared for the loneliness that ensues until a stray cat begins regular visits. The cat's space on the porch, however, is soon invaded by a stray dog who drinks the milk and eats the food Mr. Hacker has left for the cat, even when the old man provides dog food as well. All is resolved when canine persistence leads to a happy solution: the dog becomes Mr. Hacker's indoor pet while the cat is left to enjoy dominion over the porch. Nine short, simple chapters and Modell's characteristic cartoon drawings will make this a popular choice for reading aloud or for beginning readers.
