PreSchool-Grade 2-- An attractive picture book with a Pueblo theme and Southwestern art that is an interesting blend of old and new, but with a story that holds no magic. Thunderspirit is a ghost wind who follows his friends Nanabee the sheep and the Great Chief to the city. After a night of trying to sleep in the park, Nanabee is locked up in the zoo when she eats the grass. Thunderspirit finds her and uses magic to save the sheep. The pictures, in soft, glowing pastels, have a wonderful whirling flow and movement. The artist uses a pointillist dot effect on the colors, which evokes the desert atmosphere. And the characters are charming. Unfortunately the plot lacks motivation, thought, and continuity, and the text is stilted. Why does a magical wind that can get to the city all by itself suddenly need a taxi? On their safe return home, "the chief tried to think why he wanted to go to the city in the first place."
