Inlander, coauthor of Medicine on Trial ( LJ 5/1/88) and Medicare Made Easy ( LJ 4/1/89), is a forthright advocate of medical consumerism. In the preface to this new edition of the 1985 original ( LJ 7/85), he writes, "Despite all the rhetoric, all the advertising, all the money spent, a hospital stay in the 1990's is no safer than it was in the 1980's." Once considered sarcastic and strident, his words now read like pretty mundane stuff as people become more skeptical and vigilant about decisions that affect their medical care. Nothing in the first edition has been removed, although statistics have been updated and forms have been reworded for greater clarity. The only new additions are two chapters on "Dying at the Hospital" and on Medicare--both rapidly changing topics. The first edition still makes sense; but if all your copies have gone to the hospital, this second edition is a good purchase. Recommended.
