Elizabeth Drew's 1979 book Senator is a behind-the-scenes journalistic profile of U.S. Senator John C. Culver (D-Iowa). Through tracking Culver for ten days on Capitol Hill and in Iowa, the book captures the exhausting pace, legislative process, and political negotiations involved in day-to-day Senate life. Elizabeth Drew is an acclaimed American political journalist and author, best known for her coverage of Washington, D.C. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1935, she served as the Washington correspondent for The Atlantic and The New Yorker, and is widely recognized for her authoritative books chronicling the Nixon and Clinton impeachments. She was Washington correspondent for The Atlantic Monthly (19671973) and The New Yorker (19731992). She hosted her own interview program, Thirty Minutes With. for PBS between 1971 and 1973, for which she won an Alfred I. duPontColumbia University Award. Drew was a panelist for Meet the Press for many years and made frequent appearances on the PBS News Hour and other radio and television programs. Drew was a panelist for the first debate in the 1976 U.S. Presidential election, and moderated the debate between the Democratic candidates for the nomination in the 1984 race. Drew has published 14 books, including Washington Journal: The Events of 1973-74, an account of the Watergate scandal; Portrait of an Election: The 1980 Presidential Campaign; On the Edge: The Clinton Presidency, Citizen McCain, George W. Bush's Washington, and Richard M. Nixon. John Chester Culver (August 8, 1932 December 26, 2018) was an American politician, writer, and lawyer who was elected to both the United States House of Representatives (19651975) and United States Senate (19751981) from Iowa. He was a member of the Democratic Party. He served in the military as a captain in the United States Marine Corps from 1955 to 1958. Culver became active in politics, working as a legislative assistant for Senator Ted Kennedy, his former Harvard classmate, in 1962. He began his law practice in Iowa a year later. In 1964, he ran against Republican U.S. Representative James E. Bromwell. With President Lyndon B. Johnson's landslide victory, many Democrats, including Culver, were carried to victory. In 1974, Culver ran for the U.S. Senate, narrowly defeating David M. Stanley with 52% of the vote for the seat left open by the retirement of Harold E. Hughes. Culver served one term in the U.S. Senate, from 1975 until 1981. With Ronald Reagan's national victory as president, Culver was defeated in 1980 by Republican Chuck Grassley, taking 46% of the vote to Grassley's 53%. In 2000, Culver co-wrote American Dreamer, the first comprehensive biography of Henry A. Wallace. Culver was a featured speaker at the August 28, 2009, memorial service for Ted Kennedy, speaking as his Harvard classmate and teammate, Senate colleague, and longtime friend. Derived from a Kirkus review: When Elizabeth Drew unveiled John C. Culver, Democrat of Iowa, in The New Yorker last year, he was next to unknown nationwide; yet she called him "one of the most effective members of the Senate." Culver, 46, is a big, expansive man, quick to laugh or show anger; a highly intelligent, thorough, principled political operative. Leadership, he tells Drew, is pursuing objectives, however "uncomfortable" or unsexy. He takes on only a limited number of issues, "ones that make an important point. . . and on which he has a reasonable chance of winning." During the ten days Drew spends with him he is very much involved in managing his first major bill, an amendment to the Endangered Species Act of 1973 providing for arbitration in ease of conflicts between environmentalists and builders. As a supporter of SALT and a critic of nuclear "deterrence," he is angling for the release of an intelligence report on Russian civil defense: do they feel that they can safely lunch a nuclear war or do they simply "have their.
