Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Prime Minister of India since March 1998, was born in Gwalior in 1924. After obtaining his MA degree, he worked as a journalist and was editor of Rashtradharma and Panchajanya. He gave up journalism in 1951, when he became a founder member of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, forerunner of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He was elected to the Lok Sabha for the first time in 1957, and has been re-elected eight times since.
