Excerpt from Compression of an Axially Symmetric Plasma With Non-Isotropic Pressure
The models used in the theoretical description of the pinch vary in complexity from the one - fluid infinite conductivity magnetohydrodynamic model represented by the Lundquist equations to self - consistent particle theories involving Vlasov equations for each component of the gas. Our treatment uses a two - fluid collision-free model which is almost consistent with the particle formulation.
Much of the research on the pinch problem hasinvolved numerical studies of the motion. One of the earliest was performed by Rosenbluth (i9) using his so called snow plow model in which all material swept up by the incoming boundary is piled in a thin layer and travels with the boundary. In the same paper he also investigates numerically a simplified particle model. This model predicts the formation of shocks which precede the incoming boundary and are reflected from the center.
