The whole design is very appropriate to California, which in 1851 had but recently emerged from Mexican domination. The denomination of one doubloon, or sixteen dollars. Is likewise appropriate, as the doubloon was so long current in that section of the country.

The diameter of the piece is 35 inin., with plain edge, and it is com posed of a brass composition.
