Je me suis astreint a rendre, aussi littéralement que cela m'a été matériellement possible, le sens du texte du Mahabharata, édition de Calcutta. Le génie de la langue sanscrite est bien différent de celui de la langue française. Il comprend un nombre extrême de redites, qu'on ne peut pas toutes éviter en français, sous peine d'être incomplet; d'autant plus que les auteurs sanscrits ont une tendance marquée aux jeux de mots par à peu près, qu'une traduction ne peut pas rendre, et qui perdent, en passant d'un idiome dans l'autre, tout le sel qu'ils peuvent avoir dans l'original.
