Tel est le sens du symbole familier que j'ai donné pour titre à ces pages. Le Cynique, autre fois, s'est rendu célèbre en poursuivant avec sa lanterne un homme qu'il n'a point trouvé. C'est un peu la même folie qui fait errer d'un Maître à l'autre, sa lampe incertaine à la main, chaque Ecolier qui, de vingt à trente, souhaite un modèle où fixer son coeur. Il ne le rencontre pas, c'est fatal. Mais cette enquête n'est point vaine si elle lui enseigne, un beau soir, que la seule manière efficace d'atteindre l'image qu'il rêve, c'estpour chacun, selon ses forces, de la réa liser en soi.
