Excerpt from La Lizardière: Edited With Introduction, Notes, Exercises and Vocabulary
Bornier's family, sincerely pious, desired to have him enter the church an aunt had dreams of his rising to the dignity of bishop and he was sent to various seminary schools, at Versailles, Montpellier and saint-pons. As, however, he showed not the slightest indication of a religious vocation, Bornier, like so many other French men of letters, turned to the study of law. Legal problems appealed to him but little more than theology, and though he took his law degree he never made any practical use of it. His interest had long been given to literature, and in 1845 the fruits Of his literary preoccupation appeared in his Premiéres F em'lles, a volume of verse, which attracted much attention. Chateaubriand and Vic tor Hugo deigned to congratulate the young poet in eulogistic terms, while Beranger, the popular poet of the period, Offered him some very friendly advice.
