A long time ago in England, when they first made graded roads, they charged travelers a cer tain sum for using them, which they called 'toll.' When the toll collector, who was armed with a pike, saw a traveler coming, he extended his pike across the road, to remind him that he must pay before he could go further; when the money was paid, the pike was turned, and the traveler could go on his way rejoicing. So it got to be a cus tom to call all roads 'turnpikes' when toll was charged.
