The questions discussed in this volume are all of vital interest to humanity, and upon the proper solution of some of them depends the fate of the republic. While some of these papers and speeches have been published in one way or another it is believed that 'by putting them in a more enduring form I can assist the patriotic student and thus render a service to my country. In discussing the tariff, the money question and government by injunction the same illustrations are used in different speeches, which-would be objectionable if the book were a treatise to be read consecutively, but I have concluded that in this case it would be best to have each speech as nearly com plete as possible. Consequently the short repetitions have beeii al lowed to stand. Justice requires me to state that in the original preparation of the matter in this book I have been greatly assisted by the unerring judgment and wise criticism of Mrs. Altgeld. Through her influence'some of the articles were softened in tone and others were changed in character.
