Christopher columbus was born at Cogolato, in the territory of Genoa, and, having been early taught navigation, lived by drawing charts for the sea-service. The skill of the Portuguese in mari time affairs at length induced him to settle at Lisbon, where, by the regularity of his conduct, he acquired a considerable number of friends, married a woman of fortune, and for some time after traded to the coast of Guinea.
