IX), a fait connaître un élément linéaire réductible d'une infinité de manières à la forme harmonique; et il a signalé comme devant faire le sujet d'une recherche difficile la détermination générale de tous les éléments linéaires jouissant de la même propriété. En outre, il a indiqué (livre VI, Chap. 11) un moyen de trouver ceux de ces éléments linéaires qui convieu nent à des surfaces de révolution.
