Tan present volume is arranged so as to follow and continue that on Mnnmvar. History, in the same series. It has been prepared by the same Author, and strictly on the same principle - the principle, namely, of omitting no fact to which a reference might be expected in such a compendium, but of making the narrative more full and particular wherever the true historical interest seemed to require it. On this principle, a larger space has been allotted to the last of the three periods traversed - the period from 1789 to the present time - than might at first seem pro portionate. It has been felt, however, that this is particularly necessary in a volume intended for use in schools, and for the purposes of private instruction in History. An accurate and tolerably full knowledge of what has taken place in Europe since the epoch of the French Revolution, is absolutely essential to the intelligent comprehension of the events that are happening around us at the present day, and engaging our attention, whether we comprehend them or not.
