The question of kinship in marriage, within what degrees it should be permitted, and whether near of kin should be allowed and even encouraged to marry has attracted attention and provoked discussion from very early times.

Reasoned Objection to marriages Of near kin on the grounds Of harm to the Offspring, however, seems to be Of relatively late growth. Plato, in the Laws, says that the reason why such marriages are forbidden (he is re ferring to the marriage Of brother and sister) is simply habit and custom, as were such marriages allowed people would marry those most like themselves, which would prevent the proper mixture of character and property.
