The following compilation is intended to serve as a com panion to our French Grammar during the three years' course generally prescribed in our colleges for the study of French. Although the earlier selections are simple and easy, and are followed by others of gradoelly increasing difficulty, yet there is no strict process of gradation or classification carried on through the entire book. N either have the selections been chosen merely with the view of collecting models for class exercises, although they contain abundant material for these. The aim of the compiler has been to furnish such a collection as would afi'ord the teacher an opportunity to select passages for reading and translation, for parsing and analysis, and models for com position, according to the difl'erent needs or capacities of different pupils or classes; and, at the same time, to supply the pupil with a course of reading, at once attrae tive and instructive, and covering the whole field of French literature.
