The books printed before 1501 have long been looked upon as a class apart, and their enormous rise in prices, during the last twenty or thirty years, has drawn still more attention to them.

The literature dealing with the subject has grown with the interest, until we have now so large a number of volumes that the ordinary collector, librarian or book seller has been unable to keep pace with the develop ment. It is not so much a deliberate ignoring of recent research as a real ignorance of the work that has been done, and its application to the needs of a catalogue or bibliography.
