Exploring the sometimes-heated exchanges found in the letters of Paul, Calvin Roetzel compares Paul's Jewish background and the cultures of his converts. Roetzel brings alive Paul's intriguing and sometimes enigmatic personality, making his theology as accessible and engaging to Christians today as it was to Christians living in the first century.

Zustand: Gut. Fourth Edition. XII, 241 Seiten / p. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - sehr guter Zustand / very good condition - PREFACE to the FIRST EDITION THIS BOOK WAS CONCEIVED in my work with undergraduates. Many of them were trying to read the letters of Paul for the first time and were frankly bewildered. The meaning of these documents was hardly obvious to them, and the identity of Paul's conversation partners was obscure if not hidden altogether. So I wrote this book to assist people like themthose who are systematically reading Paul's letters for the first time as well as those returning to Paul for a fresh look. The book is meant to be read in a few days before turning to the letters themselves, and its purpose is to sensitize the student to the background of Paul and his readers as well as to the dynamic nature of the letters themselves. It is my hope that the modern reader will come to know the letters less as repositories of static truth than as lively and sometimes turbulent exchanges over the nature of the gospel. -- The book also aims to sharpen the reader's historical imagination in order that he or she can begin the task of interpreting the letters. Any beginning reader will no doubt change his or her interpretations many times (just as I have changed my own); but intelligent reading of the letters will necessitate some kind of interpretation, and I have tried to clear the ground with this book so that the reader may begin. I have attempted to warn the reader against certain pitfalls, throw light on some issues involved in the letters, clarify the backdrop against which Paul's mission unfolds, and show the structure and function of the letter itself in the ancient world. -- Necessarily there is much here that will be commonplace to the seasoned biblical critic, and my debt to the fraternity of biblical scholars is obvious.
