Pour les artistes hollandais du XV° siècle, la Flandre 0pulente a dû être une terre promise. C'est là que résidait la cour, amie du faste, et qu'elle entretenait nombre d'artistes. Déjà, au cours des trente premières années du siècle, Hubert et Jean Van Eyck y portèrent la peinture à un degré de perfection qui n'a plus été atteint depuis. Jean Van Eyck, le peintre diplomate, qui demeura à La Haye depuis 1422 jusqu'à 1424, auprès de son protecteur Jean de Bavière, a dû donner aux Hollandais une forte impression de la considération dont l'art était entouré à la cour des ducs de Bourgogne.
