In presenting this manual of schoolroom equipment, improvement and construction, the Department of Public Instruction desires to arouse school officers, teachers, parents and patrons of the public schools of Michigan to the desirability of having the best possible conditions for health, comfort and efficiency in the schoolroom, and also to the possibility of securing those conditions. It may not be possible for every district in the state to approach the ideal in one year but there is no district but what can at least make some improvement which will be. For the benefit of the children. While the equipment, improvement and construction plans given in this book will be of more interest to the rural district, much of the information will apply as forcibly to the town and city school as some of the conditions prevailing in these latter districts are as detrimental to children as those existing in rural communities. As a business proposition, a well equipped attractive school is the best possible investment a district can make. It increases the value of property, makes it' much easier to dispose of property, is the most conspicuous advertisement of the community's enterprise.
