Excerpt from Mutual Aid in Agricultural Insurance

It soon became clear that this could be both by credit and by insurance. In another treatise we have shown what our institutions of mutual credit are. Here we will only occupy ourselves with agricultural-insurance n. It is first necessary to clearly define this expression. By agricultural insur ance we mean, not all those forms of insurance likely to be found useful by the agriculturist, but only those which touch his professional life. An agriculturist, like any other person, may be inducedto contract an insurance on his life: but in that there is nothing inherent to his trade, and it is therefore not a case of agricultural insurance. If, on the contrary, 1t is a question of guaranteeing against the risks of hail or accidents to his employees, against the mortalityof his cattle or the risks of the buildings on his farm catching fire, these do represent agricultural insurance. The field before us is, then, a fairly vast one, and we shall come across very diverse forms each having its own particular technicalities.
