Reductions in heating value standards in many of our cities within the past two or three years are claimed to have brought about material savings in the cost of manufacture of gas and lower prices to the consumer than if the former standards had been continued. However, the reductions in standards have not always been brought about without some complaint from the con sumers that the service was inferior and the total cost greater with a lower-heating value gas than with a gas of higher-heating value.

The Public Service Commission of Maryland has undertaken to investigate this matter very fully, with a view of determining the most economic and satisfactory heating-value standard for the city of Baltimore. In connection with this investigation the com mission requested the Bureau oi Standards to make laboratory tests to determine the relative efficiency of gases of different heating value and the adaptability of existing appliances for gases differing in heating value and composition.
