The author's endeavor throughout this work has been to convey an impression of the personality of each composer, rather than merely to furnish a collection of biographical detail. A Chronological Summary of Works is appended to the chapter devoted to each composer, and a general Chrono logical Table to the whole.

Some of the chapters originally appeared in The Sun, and the author is indebted to the editor of that magazine for a cordial acquiescence in his proposal to incorporate them in this volume.
