With regard to any strictures contained in this little work upon the administrative system pursued within the colony of Algeria, it will be found by those who will examine a few of the countless brochures annually issuing from the French press, upon Algeria its present state and future prospects, that the few remarks I have ventured to make are not by any means adverse to the general opinion of those most interested in the welfare of the colony.

I cannot allow the following pages to go forth without expressing my sincere thanks to robert st. John, Esq., Her Britannic Majesty's consul-general in Algeria, for the many and kind attentions shown to me by himself and his family during my seventeen months' residence in the colony.
