Excerpt from The State of the Trade: Observations on Eight Hours and Higher Prices
ON the 11th June, 1872, the New York Typographical Union made an application to the employing book and job printers of this city for a conference as to the expediency of establishing eight hours as a day's work (at the rate of $20 per week of forty-eight hours) and an advance of twenty per cent. On the present prices of piece-work.' This application was made in strict conformity with the agreement made between employers and employed in April, 1869, by which each party bound itself to confer with the other concerning all matters of disagreement, and in case of irreconcilabledifference, to give thirty days' notice of any determined change of prices or rules. The spirit of this application was as courteous as its form was equitable.
