Steam-turbine principles and practice has been pre pared, for the practical man, to furnish this information. It has been written to provide the operating engineer, the plant superintendent, or manager with such steam-turbine information as he requires in his everyday work. The aim has been'to treat only topics of two general classes: (1) Those with which a man must be familiar to insure the successful and economical Operation of steam turbines. (2) Those a knowledge of which is necessary to enable a man - one who is not familiar with the details of its design or theory - to make a wise choice if he contemplates the purchase of a turbine. Only sufficient theory is given to insure a sound understanding of the principles Of turbine operation. The design of turbines is not treated at all. A working knowledge of arithmetic will enable one to read the book intelligently.

Drawings for nearly all of the 282 illustrations were made especially for this work. It has been the endeavor to so design and render these pictures that they will convey the desired information with a minimum of supplementary discussion.
