Excerpt from Automation and Society

Archeology tells us that man's discovery of fire, its preserva tion and its utilization, was a revolutionary departure, placing him firmly apart in behavior from all other animals. This was man at his best, asserting his humanity and making himself. Fire gave Stone Age man a mastery over nature, the New Stone Age found man controlling his own food supply, the Bronze Age evolved specialized industries and organized trade, the Iron Age permitted universal application of implements for cultivation and production, and blossomed into the great Industrial Age.

Throughout each of these archeological ages, man's bio logical evolution has become almost imperceptible and his cul tural change more recognizable and definable. Each of these ages has revealed evidence of being ushered in by an eco nomic revolution, particularly improvements in implements which men use, and from a biological standpoint each of these revolutions was a success because the species survived and multiplied.
