By editing this work we do not, of course, mean to con tradict our opinion, so frequently expressed and defended, that in schools where languages are taught by native instruct ors and where classes are small, it is far better to avoid all translation and to learn the pronunciation from the teacher; for even the best system of representing the sounds of one language in another is always more or less imperfect. Con sequently, we advise such schools not to employ this book, but the regular Berlitz method only, containing no English whatever.
