Art is always excelled by Nature; and, in animated beings, liberty of movement conf'titutes the perfection of their exif'tence. Examine thofe horfes which have multiplied fo prodigioufly in Spanifh America,.and live in perfect freedom. Their motions are neither conf'rrained nor meafured. Proud of their independ ence, they fly from the prefence man, and difdain all his care. They fearch for, and procure, the food that is molt falutary and agreeable. They wander and friflc about in immenfe meadows, and collect the frefh pros dué'tions of a perpetual fpring. Without any fixed ha bitation, or other {helter than a ferene flty, they breathe a purer air than in thofe muf'ty vaults in which we win fine them, when fubjeéted to our dominion. Hence wild hosfes are flronger, lighter, and more nervous, than molt of thofe which are in a domellic Rate. The former pofl'efs force and dignity, which are the gifts of nature; the latter have only addrefs and gracefuliiefs, which are all that art can beftow.
