I now arrive at an important point in the extensive task which I have imposed upon myself. Having given in the preceding volumes a picture of the basis of the Religious System of China, definable as I have now to undertake the description of the structure which in course of ages has arisen on that basis. Animism evidently was actually the, Religion of China in the dawn of her history; it still is the fundamental and principal part of her Religion at present.
